CDR Riley enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1982, serving eight years as a boatswains’ mate, both ashore and afloat. She attended Officer Candidate School in 1990, and after completing one last tour afloat pursued a surface operations career path with assignments at Group San Francisco, CA, Station Cape May, NJ, Group Grand Haven, MI, and Sector Milwaukee, WI. She also served as a platoon officer and instructor at Officer Candidate School in Yorktown, VA, and as an Assignment Officer at the Coast Guard Personnel Command, Washington, DC.
Upon retirement in 2010 from Sector Lake Michigan, CDR Riley focused on the busy lives of her three teenage children while planning to move back to Grand Haven as soon as they were all out on their own. She moved back to Grand Haven in 2018 and became involved with the festival as a board member. In November 2023 she began her new position as Executive Director of the Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival
